Greasy hair can be unpleasant and difficult to manage. Hair often sticks together, has a shiny look and is hard to comb or style. According to Mothernature.com, redheads are least likely to suffer from oily hair, and blondes the most likely to. Learn to deal with oily hair by changing your hair care routine.
Step 1
Use a spray in dry shampoo. Purchase the aerosol shampoo at a salon--several brands are available. The product will remove oil buildup without having to wash the hair. Spray the roots of the hair where the most amount of oil has been secreted. Avoiding using a comb or brush after spraying, as the shampoo can cause static electricity to occur. Simply finger comb hair into place.
Step 2
Apply conditioner only at the ends of the hair and not throughout. Avoid applying the conditioner on the scalp or roots.
Step 3
Avoid shampoos that contain sodium laurel sulfate. This active ingredient in many shampoos is a harsh cleanser. Although the shampoo may rid the hair of oil, it can also dry out the scalp. A dry scalp will distribute more oil to the scalp, adding to the problem. Look for hair-care products made specifically for oily hair. Mothernature.com suggests using clear shampoos that leave less residue.
Step 4
Shampoo hair up to two times when showering. Apply the shampoos and massage onto the scalp. Leave the shampoo on for approximately 5 minutes to break down oil residue. Thoroughly rinse your hair after shampooing.
Step 5
Oil from your forehead can quickly transfer onto your bangs. Use an oil minimizing lotion on your forehead in the morning and afternoon to absorb excess oil. Blot your forehead with oil-absorbing tissues throughout the day. Pin bangs back or to the side to avoid grease buildup.
Step 6
Add cornstarch or baby powder into your hair to absorb oil. Sprinkle the powder in your hair during the afternoon or early evening hours to refresh your hair. Use a large makeup brush to apply the powder into the roots to minimize any residue left. Massage the powder into the scalp to absorb as much oil as possible.
