Herbs for Menopausal Hair Loss

The Mayo Clinic says one of the many possible symptoms of menopause is thinning hair. In fact, 34MenopauseSymptoms.com says the majority of premenopausal women (70 percent) will experience some degree of hair loss. EverydayHairLoss.com says hair loss that occurs during this period of a woman's life is caused by a reduction of progesterone and estrogen. Fortunately a number of hair loss treatments are available, including a few herbal remedies.

Phytoestrogenic Herbs

Phytoestrogenic (estrogenic components produced by plants) herbs many help treat low hormone levels which may slow down menopausal hair loss. According to Fem Health.net, the most effective phytoestrogenic herbs are black cohosh, ginseng, dong quai, red clover and gingko biloba. Chaste tree berry and wild yam are also recommended to help balance female hormones. Trans4Mind.com says only one phytoestrogenic herb should be used at a time.

Non-estrogenic Herbs

Non-estrogenic herbs, as the name implies, are free of estrogen. According to 34MenopausalTreatments.com, these herbs encourage hormone production in women by stimulating the pituitary and endocrine glands to expedite the production of natural hormones. However, according to FemHealth.net, very few non-estrogenic herbs contain the nutrients that are required to balance hormone levels.

Macafem

Macafem is believed to be the most effective non-estrogenic herb for menopause-related hair loss. HerbsforMenopause.com, says macafem is an annual plant that originated in Peru's Andean mountains. It is used the United States and elsewhere around the world to treat the many symptoms of menopause including hair loss. Macafem (also known as maino and Peruvian ginseng) may be the safest herbal hair loss treatment because it doesn't introduce any foreign substances into the body.
