Cold Symptoms After Exposure

According to the Mayo Clinic, a common cold can be caused by more than 200 different viruses. Therefore, a cold is a result of exposure to a virus. When you feel as if you're "catching" a cold, that means that you have started to exhibit symptoms of a cold. Colds will dissipate within a week with adequate treatment. There are some common symptoms that you can look out for to start early treatment.

Throat Symptoms

You may experience an itchy or scratchy sensation in your throat, or in more severe cases, your voice may be affected. Drinking hot tea with lemon or honey, using throat lozenges or gargling with warm salt water can help to alleviate throat symptoms.

Nasal Symptoms

You may have a runny or stuffy nose or head congestion. Taking an over-the-counter decongestant, using a saline spray or performing nasal lavage can reduce congestion and help to clear out the nasal passages so you can breathe easier. Drinking ample fluids can help to dilute mucus and clear the nasal passages as well.

Headaches, Body Aches & Fatigue

You might also experience some light head and body aches or fatigue. An over-the-counter NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug) is effective in treating head and body aches. Getting substantial rest, preferably more than you normally do, can help your body to rejuvenate itself and feel less fatigued.

Coughing or Sneezing

Periodic coughing and sneezing are sometimes associated with colds. Cough syrup can help to relieve a repetitive cough that contains phlegm or mucus. Keeping your throat moist with fluids or lozenges can help to suppress coughs as well.

Fever

In some cases you might experience a low-grade fever (up to 102 degrees F). Taking an NSAID or aspirin should lower the fever. Should you have a fever lasting for more than three to four hours, notify your physician.
