Shoulder Hot & Cold Therapy

Repetitive motions, accidents or sports injuries can cause shoulder pain, soreness or discomfort. Most shoulder injuries will heal on their own if you refrain from any potentially damaging activity. There are things you can do at home to treat your symptoms. If your symptoms don't subside within three or four days, you may need to visit your doctor.

Step 1

Use a heating pad to relieve shoulder pain or soreness. Wash and dry your shoulder prior to using the heating pad; never use a heating pad on wet skin. Apply the heating pad to the affected area or an area near the affected area. Always start with a low setting to get a feel for what temperature will be most effective. Do not use a heating pad for more than 20 to 30 minutes at a time. Avoid falling asleep while using a heating pad to avoid burns or other injuries.

Step 2

Use a warm compress to treat pain or soreness from a shoulder injury. Saturate a clean towel with water. Place it into the microwave for one minute or more until the towel is hot but not unpleasant when touched. Place the warm towel on your shoulder until the pain or soreness subsides or until the towel cools off. Repeat as necessary.

Step 3

Numb the pain of a shoulder injury with a cold compress. You can use a bag of frozen vegetables or make a simple compress at home. To make a cold compress, place ice cubes in a plastic bag and tie a knot in the top. Place the bag of ice in a towel and apply to your shoulder for up to 15 minutes or until the ice melts. Repeat as necessary.

Step 4

Use a sports cream such as Icy Hot to relieve soreness and increase flexibility and range of motion. Creams such as Icy Hot contain menthol as the active ingredient. Apply a generous amount to your shoulder. You will feel a warm sensation for several minutes, followed by a cool sensation. Repeat as needed.
