Glycerine is available in crystal-clear blocks that can be used to create handcrafted soap. Color and fragrance may be added to the glycerine during the soap-making process, or the glycerin can be left pure for beautifully clear soap. Making glycerine soap requires a simple melt and pour method that can be accomplished in a few easy steps.
Step 1
Pour rubbing alcohol into a small squirt bottle and spray it onto the soap molds to prevent bubbles from forming on the surface of the soap.
Step 2
Use a microwave-safe bowl to melt the glycerin. Add 1 lb. glycerine into the bowl. Cover it with plastic wrap. Heat the glycerine on medium heat for one minute and stir thoroughly. Heat for an additional minute if needed to complete melting. Continue stirring to facilitate melting any sold pieces of glycerine.
Step 3
Remove the glycerine from the microwave once melting has been accomplished and set it on a flat surface. Remove the melted glycerine to a glass measuring cup, or bowl with a pour spout if desired, for easy pouring into your soap molds. Allow any bubbles that formed in the glycerine to rise to the top. Spray the bubbles with rubbing alcohol to help them dissipate.
Step 4
Stir in soap fragrance, if desired. Add 0.25 oz. fragrance per 1 lb. melted glycerine to begin, and stir in additional fragrance if desired. Stir well to incorporate the fragrance throughout the glycerine. Choose fragrances that are clear and don't contain any added colorants in order to keep your soap clear.
Step 5
Pour glycerine into your prepared soap molds. Fill each mold completely to the top with glycerine. Spray the surface of each filled mold to prevent bubbles from forming on the soap. Allow the soap to sit for 30 to 60 minutes, or until hard. Place the soap in the freezer for an additional 30 minutes. Remove it from the freezer and tip each mold to release the soap.
Tips and Warnings
- Wrap soap tightly in plastic wrap or plastic bags to prevent moisture from building up on the soap. Melt the glycerine on a low to medium-low microwave heat setting. Melting glycerine on high heat can cause a murky appearance in the finished soap.
