Acne blemishes are caused by bacterial infections inside the pores that can cause skin to become inflamed and aggravated. If acne isn't treated properly, if the blemishes are picked too frequently, or if you suffer from deep-seated cystic acne, skin can be damaged and scarred. These skin discolorations can remain on your skin months after the acne breakouts have healed.

Step 1

Loosen scarred skin cells by applying a skin-softening oil facial. Pour 1 tsp. of a non-comedogenic (non-acne-causing) oil such as olive or castor into your hands, and spread it on your face. Use your fingers to massage the oil deeply into your skin, focusing on the areas that are the most scarred. After three to five minutes, fill a bowl with nearly boiling water and lean 18 inches above the water. Cover your head with a towel, forcing the steam from the water to envelope your face. After five minutes of steaming, use a moistened washcloth to wipe off the oil. Repeat this up to three times per week.

Step 2

Scrub off softened, scarred skin cells by applying a gentle exfoliant, such as baking soda. Baking soda is made up of smooth, rounded particulates that can buff away dead and discolored skin cells without scraping or irritating skin. Pour 1 tbsp. baking soda into your palm, and drizzle 1 tsp. water onto it, creating a paste. Smooth the baking soda paste onto your skin and gently massage it in, using small, circular motions with your fingers. After two minutes, rinse off the paste with warm water. Avoid the eye area, which is delicate and can become irritated easily. Repeat this up to three times per week.

Step 3

Rebuild new skin cells by applying a toner high in vitamin C, such as concentrated lemon juice. Vitamin C helps support the skin in sloughing off old, dead skin cells while developing fresh, new skin cells. Applying lemon juice to your skin eliminates scarred areas more quickly, and promotes a balanced, evenly toned complexion. Fill an empty spray bottle with concentrated lemon juice, and spray your skin liberally after it has been exfoliated. Avoid applying lemon juice near the eye area, which can become irritated. Allow your skin to dry naturally, and repeat this up to three times per week.
