Hair grows all over your body, and while you probably want the hair on your head, you might not want it on your chest, legs, back, shoulders or face. If you want to smooth up your appearance and remove unwanted hair, you have a host of choices; some are short-term and others are long-term. Traditional methods, such as shaving and plucking, are something you can do at home, but you'll need to be constantly doing them. For hair-free skin for weeks, months or forever, consider salon or dermatology procedures.
Step 1
Pluck the hairs out with tweezers. Grasp the hair close to the skin and pull it straight out with a steady motion. Because you remove one hair at a time, this is more suitable for eyebrows or stray facial hairs. You can expect to be hair free for up to two months after tweezing.
Step 2
Get your hair zapped out by an electrologist. Electrolysis is a long-term hair removal treatment that removes hairs permanently. In this procedure, a needle is inserted into each hair follicle and an electrical current is then sent to the tip. The hair root gets killed and the hair itself falls out. While it is permanent, it could take many sessions to remove large patches or expanses of hair.
Step 3
Shave your hair off. Wash your skin with warm water and leave it wet. Apply shaving cream and run a new razor against your skin in short, smooth strokes to remove the hair. Rinse your skin when you are finished and apply moisturizing cream to body areas. If you're shaving your face, use an aftershave. Shaving can keep you hair-free for three days or less.
Step 4
Visit a laser hair removal center for larger areas of hair, like the back and chest. With laser hair removal, a certified specialist will go over your skin with a laser that zeroes in on melanin. This is the substance that gives your hair and skin its color. When the hair follicle gets hit with the beam, it is destroyed and the hair falls out. While laser removal isn't generally permanent, it can keep you hair-free for months.
Step 5
Use a home waxing kit. Apply the wax with the applicator stick that comes with the kit and allow the wax to cool. Take out the cloth strip and flatten it over the top of the wax. Place your fingers on your skin, right above the strip, and grab the edge of the strip with your other hand. Pull down in a fast motion to remove the wax and hair. Waxing can keep you free of hair for up to six weeks. Many salons and spas also offer waxing services.
Step 6
Dissolve the hair off your body by using a depilatory. Wash the area with warm water or place a warm washcloth on it to soften the hair. Apply the depilatory cream and let it sit for as long as the manufacturer recommends--generally five to 10 minutes. Take a moist washcloth and wipe the hair off of your skin. This treatment can keep you hair-free for a week or two.
