Foods to Eat for Depression

We feel down at times, but there are some people who feel down for weeks. This is generally called depression, and today it affects up to 8 percent of our population. Depression can be persistent and often requires treatment. There are assortments of methods people can use to treat their depression ranging from counseling to medication. Some people have found that certain foods can help tame some of the symptoms of depression.

Omega Fatty 3 Acids

Omega 3 is important to brain function, according to Andrew Stoll, a doctor and author of "The Omega-3 Connection." It is very effective in maintaining the balance of certain neurotransmitters that cause depression such as serotonin. Many of us know that salmon, sardines and other cold-water fish have high levels of omega 3s; however, there are many other food sources that contain omega 3. Flaxseed, clove, cabbage, walnuts, cauliflower, oregano, winter squash, dark leafy greens such as kale, spinach and turnip and collard greens, soybeans, tofu, green beans and shrimp all are good sources of this helpful fatty acid.

Chocolate

Some people say chocolate can cure everything and that dark chocolate can raise serotonin levels. Neurotransmitters such as endorphins can produce a feeling of happiness that in turn can help reduce stress and lead to feelings of euphoria. This occurs because dark chocolate contains a compound called phenylethylamine, which can aid in relieving depression symptoms.

Oats

Oats can be a great source of B vitamins as well as calcium and magnesium, which are important in treating symptoms of depression, including the maintenance of a healthy nervous system. This grain can boost energy levels and still help people stay calm, relaxed and assist with insomnia. Oats are a healthy choice of food to fight depression by not only helping reduce symptoms of depression but improving overall health as well, which tends to help people feel mentally better.

Cheese

Depression can wreck havoc on concentration level. This can lead to continued depression as well as anxiety. Cheese is a handy and easy snack that contains high levels of protein and the dietary benefits of protein. These proteins are important in treating depression, as it helps regulate serotonin levels and maintain glucose levels that also affect moods.
