Norvasc (Amlodipine), a medication used to treat high blood pressure and angina, is in a class of medications known as calcium channel blockers. It is supplied in tablet form, and it is usually taken once per day. It is advised to take this medication at the same time each day. This medication controls high blood pressure and angina, but it does not provide a cure. You should continue taking this medication---even if you are feeling better---for as long as your physician recommends.
Edema
Edema is a swelling of the hands and/or lower extremities, due to the third spacing of fluids. This is the most common side effect of Norvasc. If your legs feel or begin to look puffy, and your shoes and or socks feel tight, you may have mild edema. To alleviate edema it is advised to walk frequently, drink an adequate amount of fluid and elevate legs while resting to a level above the heart. If you notice that the swelling becomes severe, you should contact your physician. He may need to prescribe you a medication called a diuretic, which will help rid your body of excess fluid.
Headache, Dizziness and Drowsiness
You may experience headache, dizziness or drowsiness while on Norvasc. These side effects may diminish over time after your body has a chance to get used to this medication. You may treat your headache with ibuprofen or acetaminophen as per your doctor's consent. If dizziness or drowsiness become severe and have an impact on your daily activities, you should contact your provider. She may consider lowering your dose or trying a different medication.
Nausea and Fatigue
Nausea and fatigue are commonly reported side effects while on Norvasc. These may diminish over time once your body gets used to this medication. You may want to consider eating smaller meals more frequently and avoiding spicy foods to help prevent nausea. Ginger and peppermint teas may also help alleviate nausea. Make sure you get enough sleep each night to help you feel more awake throughout the day.
Cardiac Effects
There are some rare, serious side effects while on Norvasc that you should be aware of. These include chest pain, rapid irregular heartbeat and fainting. If you experience any of these side effects you need to seek emergent medical care.
