Side Effects of Jantoven

Jantoven is a brand name for warfarin, an anticoagulant medication. It may be used for the prevention and treatment of several conditions, including deep venous thrombosis, which is a blood clot in either leg that could move to cause pulmonary embolisms in the lungs. Jantoven also may be used to prevent clotting from heart surgery or heart conditions such as following a heart attack, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Rare Serious Side Effects

Taking Jantoven, which is administered as a pill, may cause some rare serious side effects in some people. Check with a physician immediately if you get any of these. Rare serious side effects from Jantoven may include yellowing of the skin or eyes; vomit that contains blood; and pain in various parts of your body, including the jaw, back, arms or the top right portion of the abdomen. Other rare serious side effects may include toes that turn purple or blue, abnormal bruising, consciousness changes, abnormal bleeding, heaviness or tightness in the chest, halitosis, chills, discoloration of feces, wheezing when breathing, diarrhea, eyelid or eye-area swelling, dizziness, stomach pain, fainting, skin rash, unconsciousness, skin blisters, irregular or rapid breathing, rapid heartbeat known medically as tachycardia or an irregular heartbeat known medically as arrhythmia, pale skin, fever, toe pain, itching, vomiting, nausea and loss of appetite.

Other Serious Side Effects

The Mayo Clinic reports as "less common" other serious side effects from Jantoven, meaning they have been reported more frequently than "rare" side effects but don't happen to everyone who takes the drug. You also should consult your physician immediately about any of these: abnormal bodily weakness, stomach cramps and pain, abnormal fatigue, gum bleeding, sweating, swallowing or breathing problems, bruising that may be excessive, unexplained swelling and blood in urine. Others include shortness of breath, blood in the feces or feces that are tar-like, numbness, tingling, burning sensations, chest discomfort or pain, skin peeling, confusion, paralysis, a cough that produces blood, nosebleeds, dizziness, headaches, vaginal bleeding or menstrual flow increases and lightheadedness.

Non-Serious Side Effects

When you begin taking Jantoven, you may get some temporary side effects that aren't serious and fade as you use it more. Some of these may be alarming, so contact your doctor if they continue: prolonged or painful erections, pain in the joints or muscles, welts or sores, changes in taste, abnormal aftertaste of food, red skin, intolerance of the cold, generalized pain, flatulence and excessive intestinal or stomach gas. Others may include feeling full, decreased bodily strength, hair loss or hair thinning, welts and hives.
