Yoga has become a popular form of exercise for dealing with tension. It helps people lose weight, combat daily stress, become more flexible and increase spirituality. Today, numerous yoga DVDs are available for home exercise. When choosing a yoga DVD, consider your level of practice, flexibility, health issues and your reason for practicing yoga.

Beginners

"Yoga for Beginners" featuring Barbara Benagh was released by the popular magazine, Body + Soul. This DVD helps people who've never practiced yoga learn the basic poses. There are shorter sequences lasting nearly 10 minutes and longer routines lasting up to 90 minutes. You only need a towel and yoga mat to participate in this DVD.

"Yoga for Weight Loss for Beginners" starring Maggie Rhoades is a great DVD for people who are beginning yoga to lose weight. It includes 12 routines that range in length from 15 to 60 minutes. This DVD requires you to use weights and resistance bands.

"A.M. and P.M. Yoga" starring Rodney Yee and Patricia Walden is one of the best yoga DVDs for beginners who want to practice in the morning and at night. Viewers will follow Rodney's energizing and relaxing routine in the morning and Patricia's calming routine in the evening. Both are 20 minutes long. It's a great way to start and end the day.

Vinyasa Yoga

According to Mind Body Green, Vinyasa yoga follows a fast pace with continuous movement. Whole Living reports that "Shiva Rea--Fluid Power" is one of the best yoga DVDs. There are 20 guided sequences containing more than 4 hours of yoga. You can combine sequences to personalize your yoga workout.

"Insight Yoga" with Sarah Powers is a combination of Vinyasa yoga, Yin yoga and meditation. It's also recommended by Whole Living. The video has more than 4 hours of yoga sequences, guided meditations and information about Buddhism and Chinese medicine.

"Strength, Grace, Healing" starring Max Strom is a two-disc set ideal for someone who is at an intermediate level of Vinyasa yoga. Strom does not describe breathing techniques that are important when practicing yoga, and some of the sequences are difficult. This is one of the best DVDs to try if you've become bored with your beginner DVD.

Prenatal Yoga

Women may not want to give up their yoga practice once they become pregnant. Fortunately, there several DVDs that specialize in prenatal yoga. Two of the best are "Prenatal Yoga" starring Shiva Rea and "Prenatal Vinyasa Yoga and Short Forms" starring Jennifer Wolfe. The first DVD is one of the best because it shows modifications based on trimesters for each pose. The second DVD has short and long sequences, ranging from 15 to 75 minutes. It also includes labor poses that can be helpful during childbirth.
