Signs of Human Depression

Depression is a condition that every human experiences at some point in their lives. When depression lasts for more than two weeks, a physician will usually begin prescribing medications or therapy sessions as forms of treatment. This condition is due to a chemical imbalance in the brain and when necessary should receive treatment. Many Americans feel that depression is "all in your head" and does not warrant medical advice. If you are suffering from depression, please schedule an appointment with your physician to discuss your options right away.

Sadness

Someone who is suffering from depression is likely to experience the feeling of sadness. He may not be able to give you a reason for his sadness, but just that he is. These feelings of sadness are usually extreme and from no apparent cause.

Sleep Changes

Someone who is depressed may experience sleep changes. She may sleep many hours more than she usually does or she may sleep much less than she normally does. The chemicals in the brain that are imbalanced during depression, especially serotonin, affect sleep patterns to both extremes and should be discussed with a physician.

Hopelessness

A person who is depressed will often feel as though there is no hope left for them. These thoughts can lead to worsening symptoms such as suicidal thoughts and should be attended to immediately. Along with these thoughts, the person may experience spells of crying for no obvious reason.

Suicide

Untreated depression can easily cause a person to contemplate suicide. He feels that his life is worthless and that everyone would be better off without him. He may also feel that he doesn't deserve to feel the way that he does and that suicide is the option. Suicidal thoughts, comments or attempts should be dealt with immediately by taking the depressed person to the emergency room or calling 911.
