Byetta is an injectable form of insulin used to treat diabetics suffering from Type II diabetes. An effective means of controlling your blood sugar levels, Byetta can also cause some adverse side effects that you should be aware of before using the medication.
Most Common Side Effects
Kristi Monson, Doctor of Pharmacy, and Dr. Arthur Schoenstadt of eMedTV.com state that 6 to 44 percent of patients using Byetta during clinical trials reported side effects such as nausea, diarrhea, upset stomach and dizziness. Headaches and vomiting were also reported. In most cases, these side effects will subside. If they persist or become worse, speak with your doctor.
Low Blood Sugar
When prescribed with other diabetic medications, Byetta may cause your blood sugar levels to become too low. Dr. Schoenstadt warns that you may begin sweating profusely, suffer from bouts of extreme hunger or experience cold sweats (cold and clammy skin). Irritability and confusion often accompany low blood sugar levels, as does slurred speech. It is common to feel shaky or become dizzy; in severe cases, seizures can occur. All of these symptoms indicate an emergency situation.
High Blood Sugar
Your blood sugar levels can become too high if Byetta is not working properly. You may experience increased hunger, thirst or urination. Blurred vision, fatigue and shortness of breath can also occur. Nausea and vomiting are additional symptoms to watch for. These are all reasons to contact your doctor immediately.
Warning
Some side effects of Byetta are a warning sign to stop taking the medication. A change in urinary production--such as less output or no output at all--accompanied by a dull ache in your mid or lower back, and/or swelling of your hands or feet, may indicate kidney damage. Another serious condition to watch for is pancreatitis. This will cause side effects such as severe abdominal pain that may radiate around to your back, and persistent vomiting.
