NordicTrack ski machines have two main parts. There are the skis that you can slide back and forth in place as if you were cross-country skiing. There are also handgrips attached to arm-exerciser cords that offer resistance for your arms to pull down, similar to the effect of pushing ski poles into the ground. Either of these parts can malfunction or become difficult to use, but there are some simple things you can do to fix parts or replace them.

Stiff or Worn Drag Strap

Step 1

Use a bristle brush to remove dirt or gummy residue that may be reducing the performance of the ski machine. Scrub the drag strap with a stiff brush for best results.

Step 2

Remove the drag strap. Lower the leg resistance to the least amount. Unhook the drag strap from the drag strap adjuster on the upright tube and the S hook near the drag strap guide next to the flywheel.

Step 3

Turn the drag strap over and reinstall. Hook one end to the S hook and thread the strap back through the drag strap guide and over the flywheel.

Step 4

Take the other end of the drag strap and run it up the upright tube. Thread the end strap down through the slot on the drag strap adjuster that is closest to the upright tube.

Step 5

Bring the end back up through the slot farthest from the upright tube, which will be the only one left. Fold the remaining end over the adjuster.

Tangled or Frayed Arm-Exerciser Cord

Step 1

Remove and open the handgrips to expose the arm-exerciser cord inside each. Undo the knots and remove the washers.

Step 2

Unwind the cords from the cord drum.

Step 3

Pull the cords straight and undo any tangles in the cord. Replace with a cord if frayed. Adjust the ends so that they are of equal length.

Step 4

Wind the cord from the top hole counterclockwise around the drum until all the cord is wound. Pull the end through the metal cord guide. Do the same with the other cord. Hold the ends of the cords, one in each hand, and pull them back and forth. Keep alternating arms and pulling until the cords lie smooth in the drum.

Step 5

Put the end of one cord through the hole in the top of the handgrip. Place a washer on the cord and tie the end into a knot. Do the same on the other side and pop the handgrips back together.

Skis are Slipping

Step 1

Use a dry cloth to soak up any excess oil on the skis.

Step 2

Take a dry cloth with a dab of paint thinner on it and clean the bottom of the skis.

Step 3

Tighten the two nuts on the U-bolt of the flywheel.
