Oily hair can cause your mane to look greasy and flat. The type of hair you have determines your risk for oily hair. At the base of each hair shaft is a sebaceous gland which produces the hormone sebum. The more oil glands on your scalp, the higher amount of oil produced. People with straight and fine hair are most prone to developing oily hair since they have the most oil glands. Factors that affect your hormone levels, like stress, pregnancy and birth control pill use, can also increase your likelihood of having oily hair.
Step 1
Shampoo your hair daily. Massage your scalp during shampooing to squeeze out excess oils in the scalp. Leave the shampoo on the hair for five minutes and get a good lather before rinsing away the shampoo.
Step 2
Use a shampoo formulated for oily hair. Shampoos for oily hair types typically have fewer oils and moisturizers that weigh the hair down. A clarifying shampoo, like Suave Naturals Daily Clarifying Shampoo or Biolage Normalizing Balance Shampoo, can help.
Step 3
Skip the conditioner. Conditioners can coat the hair in extra oil and should only be used for normal to dry hair.
Step 4
Rinse with apple cider vinegar. Mix 1 tsp. of apple cider vinegar with a pint of lukewarm water. Dump this mixture over your hair as your rinse out the shampoo. This helps remove any excess oils from the shampoo.
Step 5
Apply a small amount of witch hazel soaked into cotton pads to your scalp. The witch hazel acts as an astringent to decrease oil production.
Step 6
Brush your hair as infrequently as possible. Brushing the hair brings the oil at the roots down through the hair shaft.
