Tylenol is a common over-the-counter (OTC) medication used to treat minor aches and pains and reduce fever. Tylenol is available in many forms including geltabs, liquid, chewables and capsules. The form in which the active ingredient is delivered is important, because it determines how you consume the active ingredient and how long it will have its effect on your symptoms. As with all medications, you should be aware of both the functions and side effects of the active and inactive ingredients in Tylenol capsules.
Acetaminophen
According to Drugs.com, acetaminophen is the only active ingredient in Tylenol capsules. This ingredient works by inhibiting chemical signals that are responsible for pain and fever. Acetaminophen, however, does not have anti-inflammatory properties. Drugs.com states that there are no common side effects associated with Tylenol use. However, more than 4g of acetaminophen per day in adults can lead to serious liver damage. In addition, no more than 1g of acetaminophen should be taken in a single dose. Consult your doctor if acetaminophen is not reducing your fever or relieving your pain.
Carnauba Wax
Carnauba wax is an inactive ingredient in Tylenol capsules. Inactive ingredients, or excipients, are substances that support the active ingredient or aid in ease of use of a medication. Carnauba wax is a wax from the leaf of a palm plant native to northeastern Brazil and is a glazing agent, bulking agent, acidity regulator and carrier, according to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization. It is used in many products, from automobile wax to food products. In Tylenol capsules, carnauba wax allows the capsule to be swallowed easier once it comes in contact with saliva. Do not use Tylenol capsules if you are allergic to carnauba wax.
Other Inactive Ingredients
Other inactive ingredients in Tylenol capsules are castor oil, cornstarch, FD&C Red #40 aluminum lake, hypromellose, magnesium stearate, polyethylene glycol, powdered cellulose, pregelatinized starch, propylene glycol, shellac, sodium starch glycolate and titanium dioxide, according to Tylenol.com. Do not use Tylenol Capsules if you are allergic to any of these ingredients.
