It's a new year, and many people take the opportunity to resolve to adopt a healthier lifestyle. Whether you want to get organized, include regular exercise into your day or simply lose weight, it's important to make resolutions you can stick to instead of setting goals that are so far above your expectations that you can't stay on track. These easy tips will help you succeed in bringing change to your life throughout the year.
Step 1
Jot down the resolutions you made last year and did not keep. If you made a choice to lead a healthier lifestyle, for example, but didn't keep the promise to yourself, consider adding that goal to a list of things you want to accomplish this year. Keep in mind that you can choose smaller goals to start and add to them at any time during the year. Be sure to set realistic goals.
Step 2
Give yourself little reminders. For example, if your resolution is focused around healthy weight loss, stick a note on the refrigerator so when you go to grab a snack, you're likely to pick something that will help you keep your goal in mind. If you enjoy exercise, mark your calendar to set aside more time to walk, bike, hike, swim or increase your daily workouts.
Step 3
Record your progress in a notebook or journal. Writing down results on paper actually empowers you to stick with your resolutions by building enthusiasm--you'll clearly see how well you are doing. Reward yourself to recognize your accomplishments. Remember that when you set goals on one or more activities that you really enjoy, you are more likely to stay on track because they provide motivation.
Step 4
Think positively when you set a goal. Positive thinking creates positive results. Work toward your desired goals with affirmations such as, "I can do this!" or "I will achieve my New Year's resolutions!" Visualize yourself reaching your goals. This will motivate you to move forward.
Step 5
Focus on ways to reduce stress in your home and at work. Don't let life overwhelm you. Manage your time wisely, and create an action plan that will help you get organized. Less stress will keep you on track.
