How to Read the Body Language of Women

Body language is nonverbal communication that is constantly underway whether we know it or not. Consultants at the Body Language Info Site report that as little as 5 percent of meaning is extended through words when speaking. As much as 95 percent of communication is relayed through body language. Men and women project and perceive body language differently; women send nearly five times as many messages with body language than men do. There are some basic steps you can take to read the body language of women.

Step 1

Pay attention to the color of a woman's face, neck and chest. An increase in blood circulation that typically comes with arousal will cause the skin to flush and take on a pinkish color. As a woman's blood pressure rises and her heart rate increases, she will take in deeper breaths and her breasts will rise and fall.

Step 2

Watch the eyes because that is where an enormous amount of information can be gleaned. A woman's pupils will become larger as she tries to take in more of you or when she becomes excited. Larger pupils almost always accompany arousal. Consider how fast her eyelashes are moving as well. Most women blink about 15 times per minute; fluttering eyelashes will double when a woman is interested.

Step 3

Discover when a woman is feeling stressed by her hands. Nail biting and cuticle picking are signs of stress in women. Cold hands also indicate a high level of stress. Using her hands to play with her hair is a sure sign of flirting. When twirling, flicking and stroking her hair, a woman is sending signals of sexual attraction. When she strokes her neck or plays with her necklace, she is strongly attracted because the throat and neck are erogenous zones.

Step 4

Prepare for the touch. When a woman is feeling trusting and wants you to come closer, she will touch you. It may simply be a brush against your arm, but it is not coincidental. At the first touch, she will be waiting for your response.

Step 5

Keep a woman's legs in your line of vision, because many signals are sent with foot and leg movements. When women stand with their legs apart, they typically are open to advances; this stance also is a sign of superiority, so judge the message coupled with other gestures and facial movements. When slowly crossing and uncrossing her legs, a woman is sending a strong signal of attraction.

Tips and Warnings

  • Messages typically are sent through a number of body language movements that occur simultaneously, so make sure you take in the entire woman before jumping to any conclusions. For example, while a woman may be batting her eyelashes, she might be showing her nervousness by picking at her cuticles. Her smile may not be translating to her eyes, meaning that while she is attracted to you, she also is scared of you.
  • Many women understand how their body language affects men and use it to manipulate them. Watch for signs of insincerity and lying to avoid manipulation. Again, you must pay attention to the whole picture to pick up a lie. When lying, a woman usually will not reveal the palms of her hands. She may look down or close her eyes when speaking. Another sign of lying is when a woman touches her nose or scratches her face or other part of her body.
