Hydromet is a brand name for a combination of hydrocodone and homatropine methylbromide. Hydrocodone is in a class of medications known as opioid analgesics and antitussives. It is often prescribed for pain management and cough suppression. Homatropine methylbromide is an anticholinergic/antispasmodic, which discourages deliberate overdose. Hydromet comes in tablet and syrup forms. A patient experiencing strong or bothersome side effects should notify his doctor.
Drowsiness/Dizziness
One of the most common side effects of Hydromet, according to the National Institutes of Health is a narcotic effect. This may produce symptoms such as drowsiness, dizziness, vision problems, lethargy and impaired mental and/or physical functioning. A patient's ability to perform certain tasks such as operating machinery may be impaired.
Stomach Problems
Hydromet may cause gastrointestinal problems, such as nausea, vomiting and constipation. These effects usually occur early in taking the medication and subside following the first few doses. The person should notify a doctor or pharmacist if any of these effects persist or worsen.
Drug Abuse or Dependence
Hydromet is a controlled substance. A physical and/or psychological dependence on the medication is possible with prolonged use. It should be taken exactly as prescribed. However, patients should not stop taking the medication suddenly without consulting a doctor.
Other Side Effects
Other side effects possible with Hydromet include respiratory depression, retention of urine, painful urination and skin rashes.
