The Slim-Fast diet plan isn't like other fad diets. It has helped million of dieters across the United States, Europe, Asia and Latin America. The plan is simple but very effective, with its emphasis being on reducing calorie intake via portion control. Dieters substitute meals and snacks with Slim-Fast shakes and bars that contain a balance of protein, fat, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals.

Diet Plan

The Slim-Fast plan is based on having three meals and three snacks throughout the day. You need to substitute two of your meals and one of your snacks with Slim-Fast products. For the remaining meal and two snacks, you are free to eat whatever you like. Sensible eating is encouraged, and your remaining meal should be a balanced meal consisting of protein, starch and vegetables with a total calorie content of approximately 500 calories. Calorie controlled healthy snacking is encouraged to help stave off hunger and overeating. You are also advised to undertake 30 minutes of moderate activity everyday to enhance your weight loss.

Dieters have the option of choosing from a variety of shakes, meal replacement bars and snack bars. The shakes are available in many flavors including strawberry, french vanilla and chocolate. There are four categories of Slim-Fast products each featuring shakes, snack bars, powders and meal replacement bars: The Optima family of products helps you fight hunger longer and contain less sugar, the Lower Carb products are for those dieters following a low-carb diet, Easy to Digest products are catered towards those who may sensitive to gluten or lactose, there is a range of High Protein products containing Vitamin B complex to give your metabolism a boost and there are the Original Slim-Fast products.

Slim-Fast has a user-friendly website that is free to access. This provides a wealth of information helping you along your weight loss journey. You can learn about the plan and how to follow it successfully by controlling portion sizes, there are tips on controlling cravings. There is a support network available where you can read about weight loss success stories, as well as receive and give fellow dieters encouragement on the message boards. There are helpful tools like the BMI calculator and you can read about the importance of exercise and how to get started. You also have access to registered dietetics, whom you can ask questions.

Benefits

The Slim-Fast diet offers convenience, making it easy to adopt into your busy lifestyle. The shakes and bars can be taken with you anywhere and you only have to plan and prepare one meal. You also get to eat real food and are not eliminating any of the major food groups, so are less likely to crave certain foods. It's a simple diet to follow, there are no complicated rules or calculation and you will lose weight steadily in a healthy manner.

Drawbacks

You may not like the taste of the Slim-Fast shakes and bars, particularly if you don't favor sweet foods. The shakes and bars can add up to a lot of money over time, especially if you buy the ready-to-drink shakes. You may get bored of the repetitive nature of the plan and the taste of the shakes and bars. The plan doesn't really teach you healthy eating or change your eating habits, so when you stop the plan you may end up regaining the lost weight.
