Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease characterized by joint tenderness, pain and joint stiffness, according to the Mayo Clinic. Osteoarthritis can also cause constipation, drowsiness, stomach pain and black stools. This joint disease occurs because of chronic and repetitive use of the joints. Acetaminophen, propoxyphene and tramadol are medications prescribed for osteoarthritis.
Acetaminophen
Acetaminophen is an analgesic used to treat the pain from osteoarthritis, toothaches, headaches, backaches and muscle pain. MedlinePlus says acetaminophen can cause a rash, hives, itching, trouble breathing, swelling and hoarseness. Overdosing on acetaminophen may lead to extreme fatigue, a poor appetite, bleeding or bruising, stomach pain and yellowing of the eyes (jaundice). Stomach pain and jaundice are typical signs of a liver problem.
Acetaminophen can be taken as a chewable tablet, capsule, liquid or oral disintegrating tablet. It can also be given as a suppository and taken rectally. This is an over-the-counter medication that should be taken as the package instructions indicate.
Propoxyphene
The National Library of Medicine says propoxyphene is used to treat mild to moderate pain. Propoxyphene should not be used if you have a history of addiction or suicides. Nausea, dizziness, vomiting and drowsiness are some of propoxyphene's common side effects. It can also cause lightheadedness, a skin rash, weakness and hallucinations. The National Library of Medicine says you will take 65mg of propoxyphene every four hours as needed for pain. The maximum dose for propoxyphene is 390mg per day.
Tramadol
Tramadol is used to treat moderate to moderately severe pain. According to the National Library of Medicine, tramadol can increase your risk for seizure activities, especially when you combine tramadol with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, tricyclic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors. The National Library of Medicine says tramadol causes dizziness, nausea, constipation, headache, vomiting and itching. The dose for tramadol is 50mg three or four times a day.
