Ingredients in Viagra

Erectile dysfunction is the inability to get or maintain an erection during sex. This disorder may cause strain on your relationship or affect your self-confidence, according to the Mayo Clinic. In addition, talking to your doctor about this problem may be difficult. However, your doctor may prescribe Viagra to help you with this disorder. As with all medications, you should be aware of the ingredients in Viagra and their possible side effects.

Sildenafil

According to Viagra.com, sildenafil is the only active ingredient in Viagra. This ingredient works by increasing the levels of a particular molecule that helps expand the blood vessels in your penis. These expanded blood vessels will help you maintain an erection and have healthy sexual intercourse. In addition, these vessels only expand when sexually aroused. Possible side effects of this ingredient include abnormal vision, heartburn, diarrhea, flushing, headache, nasal congestion and urinary tract infection, according to Drugs.com. Use extreme caution when taking Viagra if you have a history of heart problems or risk factors for heart disease. Do not use this medication if you are allergic to this ingredient. Consult your doctor if you are still having trouble maintaining an erection after taking Viagra.

Triacetin

Viagra contains inactive ingredients that support the active ingredient or help with ease of use. Triacetin is an inactive ingredient in Viagra that acts as a humectant, or a substance that is used to keep food moist, according to the Food and Drug Administration. Triacetin has no direct effect on controlling the symptoms of erectile dysfunction. If you are allergic to triacetin, ask your doctor about other options for treating erectile dysfunction.
