List of Anti Inflammatory Migraine Medication

A migraine is a severe headache associated with pulsating or throbbing pain, nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light. According to Medline Plus, a migraine is three times more common in women than in men. The cause of migraine headaches has been studied for some time, but researchers now believe that the cause is related to genes that control the activity of some brain cells, reports Medline Plus. Fortunately, there are medications that may relieve the symptoms of migraine headaches. In addition to other medical options, anti-inflammatory medications are commonly used for migraine pain relief.

Ibuprofen

According to the Mayo Clinic, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Midol) is a common medication used for migraine pain relief. This medication is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) and works by inhibiting chemical signals responsible for pain and reducing inflammation. If an over-the-counter (OTC) dose of ibuprofen is ineffective, see your doctor about a stronger prescription dose of ibuprofen. Do not increase the dose of ibuprofen without seeing you doctor. This may result in ulcers and kidney or liver damage. Other possible side effects of ibuprofen include abdominal cramps or pain, abdominal discomfort, bloating and gas, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, fluid retention and swelling, headache, heartburn, indigestion, itching, loss of appetite, nausea, nervousness, rash, ringing in ears, stomach pain and vomiting, according to Drugs.com.

Aspirin

Aspirin (Bayer Aspirin, Aspergum, Aspir-Low) is a common anti inflammatory used to treat migraines, states the Mayo Clinic. Aspirin is also an NSAID that works by inhibiting chemical signals related to pain. In addition, aspirin is a blood-thinning medication. Therefore, do not take this medication if you are prone to excessive bleeding. In addition, Drugs.com states that possible side effects of aspirin are black or bloody stools, severe nausea or vomiting, hearing problems, ringing in the ears or drowsiness. Aspirin should never be given to a child or teenager with a fever because a serious condition called Reye's Syndrome may occur.

Excedrin Migraine

The Mayo Clinic reports that Excedrin Migraine is a common anti-inflammatory medication used to treat migraines. This medication contains acetaminophen, aspirin and caffeine, according to Drugs.com. Acetaminophen is a pain reliever that does not have anti-inflammatory effects. More than 4g of acetaminophen per day can result in liver damage; therefore, do not take Excedrin Migraine if you are taking another medication with acetaminophen. Caffeine helps relieve migraine symptoms by stimulating the central nervous system. In addition, it relaxes muscle contraction in the blood vessels in your brain to improve blood flow, states Drugs.com.
