How to Help Aging Skin

Your skin is your body's first line of defense against environmental toxins and disease-causing microorganisms. It is constantly exposed to the sun's potent UV rays, and being exposed for a long time can hasten the process of aging. Other factors that speed up aging include pollution and stress. Fortunately, there are many methods you can use to help safely and successfully slow the process of skin aging.

Step 1

Add foods high in antioxidants to your diet. Antioxidants may help your skin achieve its youthfulness and optimal health by increasing collagen production and flushing out free radicals. Healthy foods high in antioxidants include red beans, prunes, blueberries, apples and cherries. Eat two or three servings of these types of food daily.

Step 2

Apply oils or lotions with vitamin E. This vitamin, when applied to the skin daily, may help it appear more youthful by reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Apply after taking a shower and/or before going to bed.

Step 3

Avoid toxins such as cigarette smoke and breathing secondhand smoke. Tobacco contains carbon monoxide and tar. These harmful substances can cause wrinkles, dryness of skin, skin discoloration and slow blood flow.

Step 4

Exercise for at least 30 minutes every day. Exercises, such as cardio, aerobics, swimming and running will increase your blood circulation, which helps bring vital nutrients to your skin. Exercising also increases collagen production, which helps maintain skin elasticity.

Step 5

Limit your exposure to the sun and apply sunscreen lotion daily. Prolonged sun exposure can cause skin discoloration, wrinkles, fine lines and skin cancer. Generously apply sunblock with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15, at least 30 minutes before going outside.
