Body mass index (BMI) compares your weight to your height, and gives you an overall idea whether you're at a healthy weight or not. It's primarily a measurement that statisticians use to evaluate health problems of a population that relate to weight. Individuals find it easy to calculate BMI since it requires measurement of only height and weight. After you find out what your BMI is, you can interpret the result using a BMI reference chart.
Step 1
Measure your height in inches with a tape measure. Convert your height in inches to meters by multiplying by .0254.
Step 2
Weigh yourself. Convert your weight in pounds to kilograms by dividing by 2.205.
Step 3
Multiply your height in meters by itself to get your height squared.
Step 4
Divide your weight in kilograms by your height squared: BMI = weight / (height x height).
