How to Remove Facial Swelling

Mild facial swelling isn't usually a concern unless other symptoms exist with it, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Swelling can be accompanied by pain. Persistent swelling should be examined by a doctor. Some causes of facial edema (swelling) include allergies, inflammation, irritation, infection and malnutrition, according to the NIH. Relieving swelling of the face can be done at home using a few things found around the house.

Step 1

Apply a cold pack or bag of ice to the swelling location. Put a towel in between the skin and the cold pack to protect the skin.

Step 2

Keep the ice on the swelling for 15 minutes. Remove it for 15 minutes and repeat. Continue doing this until the swelling diminishes. This technique works best for injuries.

Step 3

Elevate the head with extra pillows while resting or sleeping. This can reduce the swelling by preventing the blood from pooling in the face.

Step 4

Limit salt intake if the swelling seems to have occurred after consuming high-sodium foods.
