How to Use a CPAP Machine

Obstructive sleep apnea is a condition which is caused by an unusually narrow airway. This causes the patient to fall asleep because parts of the airway collapse and are blocked. This leads to the patient waking up slightly in order to reopen the airway, which prevents a full night of sleep. CPAP (continuous positive air pressure) machines supply a gentle but continuous flow of air to keep the airway open and are an extremely effective treatment for sleep apnea.

Step 1

Situate the motor portion of the CPAP machine on a firm and stable part of the floor so that the air inlet port (which is on the back of the unit) isn't blocked.

Step 2

Wash your face thoroughly using soap and warm water. Natural oils on your skin as well as makeup and facial creams can cause erosion of the CPAP mask, making it wear out faster.

Step 3

Put the mask on your head and adjust it so that it fits snugly on your head. The mask portion may be a full mask that covers your face and nose or it may connect only to your nose. The mask should fit tightly enough that it doesn't slip or shift around, but not so tight that it causes discomfort, as this can make it hard to fall asleep and can also cause air to leak out.

Step 4

Attach the hose from the CPAP device to the mask using the elbow tube on the front of the mask.

Step 5

Turn the CPAP unit on using the power switch.

Step 6

Lie on your back while falling asleep to avoid dislodging the mask or tubing.
