The National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS) states that acne is a skin disorder caused by the action of hormones like androgens and other substances on the skin's sebaceous glands and hair follicles. Factors like changes in hormonal levels, oils from skin care products, sports clothing and equipment close to skin, pollution, humidity, picking at blemishes, excessive skin scrubbing and stress can cause acne flare-ups. Over-the-counter medications like acne lotions are useful treatments when used on a regular basis, but may take up to eight weeks to see improvement, according to NIAMS.

Poly-Rejuvenation Lotion by Dermystique is an acne lotion used at night. This lotion contains a high amount of glycolic acid and 1.5 percent salicylic acid to help heal and prevent acne. It contains no benzoyl peroxide, making it less irritating. Dermystique recommends using this lotion with other products contained in the Dermystique 4-Step Blemish and Acne Therapy kit.
Neutrogena Rapid Clear Acne Defense Face Lotion
The Neutrogena Rapid Clear Acne Defense Face Lotion is a lightweight daily lotion that fights acne while providing soothing botanicals that prevent irritation and drying. Neutrogena recommends applying this lotion to clean skin once a day to start and then gradually increasing to three times per day to prevent excess skin dryness in the first days of use. If you experience excessive dryness or peeling, reduce application to once or twice per day.
