Somatropin Negative Side Effects

Somatropin is the generic name of a synthesized growth hormone for humans. Some of the brand names include Nutropin, Accretropin, Norditropin, Tev-Tropin and Omnitrope. When the human pituitary gland does not produce enough growth hormone, somatropin may be prescribed. Some of these conditions include chronic kidney disease, Turner syndrome, growth hormone deficiency, idiopathic short stature and Noonan syndrome. The drug may be derived from e-coli or from mammal cells.

Serious Side Effects

The mammalian-derived version of somatropin injections may induce serious side effects that could require medical attention. Ask your doctor. The more common of these may include irregular or rapid breathing, diarrhea, unconsciousness, tachycardia (rapid heartbeat), lightheadedness, appetite loss, nausea, and injection site skin problems such as bleeding, redness, coldness, skin discoloration, numbing, scarring, stinging, inflammation or infection. Other serious side effects include mental confusion, constipation, urinating with blood, dry mouth, feet or hands that are cold, a cough, urination difficulties, headaches, indigestion, motion difficulties, nausea, stiffness in the muscles, urination pain, throat soreness, stomach pressure, sneezing, vomiting with or without blood, thirstiness and bodily swelling, particularly of the face or eyes. Less common serious side effects include loss of hair, bradycardia or a reduced heart rate, pain in the chest and depression.
The e-coli-derived version of somatropin may cause similar serious side effects as well as blurry vision, a cough that produces blood, gum bleeding, abnormal weight loss or gain, inability to move, nosebleeds, breathing difficulties, joint pain or swelling and more flow from menstruation or vaginal bleeding. Rare serious side effects include pain in the knee or hip, personality changes, visual changes, a fever, a curved spine, color perception changes, seizures, a tumor and bodily weakness.

Non-Serious Side Effects

Somatropin derived from e-coli may induce some more common temporary side effects when you begin taking it. As therapy progresses, these may disappear. They include pain in the breast, changes of voice, congestion, constipation, flatulence, swallowing difficulties and a rash. Less common effects include irritability, insomnia, sadness, appetite loss, decreases in pleasure or interest and concentration difficulties.
Somatropin derived from mammals may produce more common non-serious side effects such as patches of purple or blue on your skin and skin that is abnormally warm. Rarely, it may induce breast swelling or soreness in men and women, and the potential for skin lesion growth increases.

Overdose Side Effects

The e-coli variety of somatropin, when given in doses that are more than recommended, may produce overdose side effects. Go to the emergency room if you experience menstrual stoppage, backaches, pain in the extremities, sweating that is excessive, weakness that is extreme, feet or hands that increase in size or urine that is pale and produced in excess.
The mammalian type of somatropin has the potential for many more serious overdose side effects. These include speech slurring, blurry vision or other visual changes, seizures, shortness of breath, anxiety, depression, increased urination, nightmares, nervousness, thirstiness, cold sweats and even coma.
