Neem is a tree that's used as an herbal culinary spice and as an herbal tincture and extract for its healing properties. It's also used in toothpastes, creams and lotions, according to the Stason.org website. Neem bark, leaves, fruit, seeds and oils contain pharmacological substances that have therapeutic qualities such as antiviral, antifungal, antimicrobial, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. Neem fights infection and boosts the immune system without destroying beneficial bacteria in the body. The high fatty-acid content of neem oil makes it very effective in treating several skin ailments. It also has skin-rejuvenating qualities.

Treating Skin Conditions

Due to the healing properties of neem, it's useful in treating a variety of skin conditions and is especially effective in treating those who don't respond to typical medical treatment, Stason.org says. Neem is used to treat such skin conditions as acne, psoriasis, eczema, ringworm and warts. It's also beneficial in treating the scalp for dandruff and scaling. Neem is beneficial to skin by helping heal minor scrapes and skin abrasions because of its antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.

Dry Skin

Neem soap and moisturizer containing neem is beneficial for mildly dry skin, according to Neem America Incorporated. For skin that's severely dry, apply neem moisturizer several times per day.

Wrinkles

Creams that contain neem oil moisturize the skin and protect it to prevent wrinkles, Neem America Incorporated says. Neem oil contains immune-stimulating compounds that help the deeper skin layers fight pathogens below the skin surface. This helps skin remain supple. Face packs made from neem bark soothe skin and the compounds are quickly absorbed into the skin, making skin feel soft and reducing the effects of aging.

Vitiligo

Natural Health Cure says taking 4g neem leaves supplement three times per day can help in reversing the discoloration of skin caused by vitiligo, a skin disorder that causes patches of skin to lose its color. Neem oil can also be applied to the affected skin areas to aid in the reversal of skin discoloration.

Eczema

Neem protects the skin and helps heal scaling, lesions and irritation associated with eczema, according to Neem America Incorporated. Because of the concentration of active compounds of neem seed oil, it's the preferred neem treatment when dealing with eczema. For those with severe eczema, in addition to applying neem seed oil to affected skin areas, drinking a neem leaf tea with 1/4 tsp. pepper twice a day can aid in healing eczema more quickly.
