An itchy scalp is something that affects many people and causes severe discomfort. It can be caused by various reasons that include: dandruff, dry skin, head lice, unwashed hair, oily skin, eczema or dermatitis. It can be very difficult to find the right treatment for this sometimes chronic problem. However, herbal remedies may offer you the best form of treatment without chemicals.
Aloe
According to the University of Michigan Health System (UMHS), aloe is an excellent treatment for an itchy scalp. Treating your scalp with a topical treatment that contains at least 30 percent aloe can relieve the problem of scaling and itching of the scalp. In fact, the UMHS points out that although significant improvement was seen in people who tried an emulsion of 30 percent aloe topical treatment, even more people saw improvement when using an emulsion of 62 percent aloe.
Licorice
According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC), the licorice herb may be helpful in treating an itchy scalp. Licorice can be easily obtained through most herbal or health food stores. Using a licorice oil or cream will help to cool and calm an itchy scalp. Try massaging some licorice oil or cream into the scalp where the itching is occurring. You should start feeling a difference soon after applying the herb.
Witch Hazel
Witch hazel (either cream or liquid) can be helpful in treating severe itching. Witch hazel soothes and calms itching and helps to heal any breaks in skin caused by excessive scratching. Another plus is that witch hazel can be easily obtained at any pharmacy or large retail store. In addition, some people who suffer from severe scalp itch wash their hair as they normally would and then rinse it with a witch hazel solution. To make this, mix equal parts of witch hazel and distilled water. You may want to do this for several days until your scalp feels better.
St John's Wort
According to the UMMC, St. John's wort used as a topical treatment has been shown to be effective with healing an itchy scalp because it helps to treat the cause of the scalp problem. You can purchase a St. John's wort salve to put on the spot that itches. However, if you have a more chronic condition, try taking a St. John's wort supplement for a healing treatment.
