Process of Colon Cleansing

Colon Function

The colon is the bottom segment of the large intestine which leads to the rectum. This area collects waste materials, absorbs water and preserves a healthy electrolyte/water equilibrium. The colon-cleansing process is intended to remove undigested materials such as fecal matter and toxins from the digestive tract. Fecal compaction occurs when waste is stuck in the colon or intestine. This often results in abdominal pain, uneasiness and bloating. Over time, damage to the colonic tissue may occur which can attribute to headaches, fatigue, loss of appetite and irritability. Toxins can also build up and cause acne, arthritis, asthma and allergies.

Fasting

Although not necessary, fasting for a day or two can improve the colon cleansing process. When fasting, increase your intake of salt, water, fresh vegetable and fruit juices. If you do not fast, stop the use of unnecessary medications and supplements (excluding vitamins) for three days prior to the cleanse. Cutting out all junk food such as chocolate, processed foods and caffeine are vital to a successful cleansing process.

Psyllium Husk and Bentonite Clay

During the first few days of the cleansing process, you will drink a mixture of psyllium husk and bentonite clay dissolved in water. For the first three days, the intake requirement is once a day, two hours before or after a meal; never with food. Your intake of psyllium husk/bentonite clay should gradually increase. On days four through six, drink the mixture twice per day. Day seven calls for three glasses of the concoction. On and after day seven, drink the mixture four or five times per day for the remainder of the cleanse. Increase your intake of water and fruit and vegetable juices to remain hydrated.

Pro-Biotics and Enemas

Throughout the cleansing process, the body eliminates both good bacteria as well as built-up toxins. Therefore, a pro-biotic must be ingested to replenish the body with good bacteria. Additionally, once per day throughout the process, an enema or saltwater flush must be performed to eradicate toxins from re-entering the body through the anus. This can be accomplished using an enema kit or by drinking 2 qt. of salt water in the morning. The general cleansing period usually lasts from two to four weeks. An additional alternative to the psyllium husk/betonite clay mixture is Colonix. This product tends to produce a less intense cleanse.

Warning

According to the Mayo Clinic, the general consensus among the medical community is to only perform a colon cleansing when recommended by a doctor. When performing an enema to clear contents out of the colon, it can damage the colon lining due to the water pressure. Also, performing a cleanse regularly can harm the function of the colon because it detracts from the colon muscles staying in shape. Consequently, the muscles weaken and become less efficient, thus making it more difficult to pass waste through the digestive system.
