Tranylcypromine, known by its brand name Parnate, is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor used in the treatment of depression. It helps to block the chemical monoamine oxidase in the central nervous system, which helps to relieve some forms of depression. It is a prescription medication available as a tablet.
Psychological Side Effects
Tranylcypromine, along with other MAOI antidepressants, may cause serious psychological side effects that you should report to your physician as soon as possible. The Mayo Clinic states the incidence of occurrence of these types of side effects is unknown. Serious psychological side effects of tranylcypromine may include anxiety, agitation, mental confusion, mental depression, hostility, irritability, nervousness, restlessness, a stupor and seizures.
Other Serious Side Effects
Parnate also has been reported to cause many other potentially serious side effects in people who take it. These may range from the very serious such as a coma to other side effects that may not appear as serious but are indicative of a problem. Talk to your doctor if you get any of these. They include a decrease in or lack of bodily motion, out-of-control physical actions, skin yellowing, rapid weight gain, shortness of breath, gland swelling, insomnia, an unsteady walk, abnormal bodily weakness, urination pain, throat soreness, excitement in the way you act, feel or talk and tiny red spots on the skin. Non-Serious Side Effects
Tranylcypromine also may produce non-serious side effects when you begin your treatment. They probably will go away on their own, but tell your doctor if they do not. They may include a loss of weight, pain in the abdomen, bodily weakness, vision blurring, insomnia, constipation, a rash on the skin and noises such as buzzing or ringing in the ears. Others are skin redness, a lowered libido or interest in sex, spasms in the muscles, diarrhea, loss of memory, drowsiness, appetite loss, thinning or loss of hair, itching, impotence, hearing loss or welts or hives.
