Genital Thrush Symptoms

Genital thrush is a medical condition resulting from a fungal infection caused by the overproduction of a type of yeast called Candida. This condition, also called a yeast infection or candidiasis, most frequently occurs in women and can cause a number of uncomfortable symptoms. Treatment of genital thrush symptoms involves the application of antifungal treatments to the genital area.

Genital Discharge

Women with genital (vaginal) thrush commonly experience abnormal vaginal discharge. The consistency of the discharge may vary but is typically observed to be thick and mimic the appearance of cottage cheese. Men with genital (penile) thrush may also experience abnormal discharge of a similar consistency, which generally occurs underneath the foreskin of the penis. If you experience abnormal genital discharge, seek additional medical care. This symptom may be indicative of a different type of infection, such as a sexually transmitted disease (STD).

Genital Irritation

Severe genital itching is a common symptom of genital thrush in men and women. Excessive scratching of the genital area may lead to additional symptoms, including soreness or redness around the genital organ or anus. Men may experience burning or irritation at the tip of the penis or underneath the foreskin, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) says on its website. A rash may also develop on the genital organs, which may appear red or inflamed. Swelling of the genital area may also occur in certain people. Genital irritation may indicate that you have a urinary tract infection or an STD. If you experience genital irritation, see a doctor.

Urinary Pain

Men and women who develop a genital thrush infection may experience pain or discomfort when passing urine. Additional symptoms related to this infection, such as itchy or inflamed genitals, may cause the genital area to become extremely sensitive to additional irritation. If you experience urinary pain, speak with your doctor for further evaluation. This symptom is also associated with urinary tract infections and STDs.

Pain During Sexual Intercourse

Inflammation and irritation of the genital area may cause pain during sexual intercourse in people who have a genital thrush infection. Genital itching or swelling can cause the genital region to become very sensitive, which can make sexual intercourse difficult or uncomfortable. Rarely, men or women with a genital thrush infection may be able to pass the infection to a partner during sexual intercourse, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says. Speak with your doctor for further treatment if this is the case.
