How to Grow Back My Thinning Hair

Thinning hair is the beginning stages of hair loss. You may notice hair that falls out while showering or patches of hair missing from the scalp. Thinning hair can be caused by genetics, medical conditions and the use of certain prescription drugs. Before you try to grow back thinning hair on your own, speak to your doctor. Treating the underlying cause can help prevent losing more hair, and treatment may be as simple as changing your medications.

Step 1

Apply a topical solution to the scalp. There are topical treatments that use minoxidil to grow back hair that has thinned out. Brand examples of minoxidil treatments include Rogaine and are available over the counter. Apply the solution twice a day to the scalp.

Step 2

Handle the hair gently. To prevent breakage and problems growing your hair, don't place your hair in tight styles, like ponytails and buns. Avoid twisting and pulling at the hair.

Step 3

Keep heat exposure at a minimum. To help your hair grow back, you should limit the amount of heat that you use to style it. Limit hair dryer, flat iron and curling iron usage. If using heat-based product tools is unavoidable, spritz your hair with a protective solution first like Nexxus Heat Protexx.

Step 4

Eat a well-balanced diet. A nutritionally sound diet can help your body naturally produce hair. Make sure you eat foods high in protein, iron, the B vitamins and beta carotene. Food sources of these nutrients are milk, turkey, fish, chicken, peppers, beans, eggs, carrots and green leafy vegetables.

Step 5

Speak to your doctor about a prescription-based treatment method. If you are unable to grow back the thinning hair on your own, he can give you a prescription for an oral medication like Propecia. Steroids can be injected into the scalp to stimulate hair growth as well.
