When a birthday or Mother's Day crops up, it can be somewhat challenging to find a gift that is appropriate for your mother. A gift card might suffice, but it isn't as personal as a gift that shows how much you appreciate your mom. With a bit of research and some well-chosen shopping, the perfect gift for a mom need not be difficult.
Step 1
Evaluate her interests and needs. Although most moms focus their energies on their children, many develop outside interests as their children grow older. Perhaps your mom plays tennis, likes yoga or has a regular bridge group. Use this information to guide your gift giving.
Step 2
Think about what you can do to make things easier for your mother. If you're on a budget, a coupon or book of coupons is especially thoughtful and welcome. Focus the coupons on chores if you know your mom loathes dealing with tasks such as cleaning the gutters or mowing the lawn. If your mom is too busy to focus on minutiae, offer a book of coupons that weeds out the linen closet or sorts through the odd socks.
Step 3
Shop early. Although you may stumble across a great gift for mom the night before, it can be stressful knowing you need to have the right gift tomorrow. Give yourself some time to browse through some of her favorite shops (check her closet to know her size and favorite brands) to find an item that she'll appreciate and use.
Step 4
Make a gift of your time. Although young mothers have plentiful time with their kids, mothers of grown children may prefer a lunch or dinner together. If you're low on funds, consider taking your mom for a walk on a local trail or scheduling time for a long chat on the phone.
Step 5
Avoid cliches. Most mothers don't really enjoy coffee mugs emblazoned with "#1 Mom" and the like. Their reward is in seeing their children mature and grow in their own lives. If you can't find a gift in stores or can't afford a gift, don't buy one. Instead, focus on either finding a gift at another time or using one of the steps above to guide your giving.
