Acne is a skin condition that occurs when the pores are blocked by sebum, an oily substance produced by the sebaceous glands. These pores can become inflamed and erupt into pustules. This can result in scarring when the pustules rupture and fail to heal quickly. Olive oil is a home remedy commonly used to treat acne scars. It can moisturize the skin and minimize the appearance of the scar tissue.
Preparation
Purchase pure olive oil from a grocery store or health food store. The olive oil treatment will be more effective if you wash your face with a mild soap and warm water. This will prevent dirt or makeup from being rubbed into the acne scar.
Mixture
An olive oil treatment can be done with pure olive oil. You can also mix the olive oil with lemon juice. This mixture will lighten the scar and soften it at the same time.
Standard Treatment
Dip your fingers into the olive oil, then gently massage it into your acne scars using small, circular motions. Allow your skin to absorb the olive oil for about 15 minutes before rinsing it off with water. Repeat this procedure up to five times per day.
Night Treatment
The last treatment of the day with olive oil should be done just before you go to sleep. Message the olive oil into the acne scar as you normally do, but keep the olive oil on your face while you sleep. This can help your skin to repair the scar tissue more quickly.
Facial Scrub
Olive oil can also be used to make a facial scrub. Mix baking soda with olive oil until it becomes a paste. Apply this facial scrub to the acne scars and scrub them with a washcloth. Rinse your face with warm water. Perform this procedure up to three times per week to reduce the appearance of acne scars and exfoliate your skin.
