Lips may become dry, and in some cases cracked, under certain circumstances, such as exposure to cold, dry air. This condition is known as chapped lips. There are a number of known causes of chapped lips. Fortunately, a number of effective and inexpensive remedies are readily available, behavioral changes are usually effective and medical attention is not usually needed.

Causes of Chapped Lips

Lips do not contain oil glands, so they tend to dry out and may become chapped. According to the Mayo Clinic, causes of chapped lips may include exposure to sun, wind, or cold; dry air; lip licking; breathing with an open mouth; contact with certain ingredients in skin-care products or cosmetics; and dehydration. Although many cases are caused by environmental triggers, a number of medical conditions, including periodontal disease, allergies, and thyroid conditions are also associated with chapped lips. Chapped lips may also be a side effect of some medications.

Changes in Behavior

Several simple changes in behavior may help prevent or improve chapped lips. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends covering the lips with a scarf or mask on windy winter days and avoiding licking your lips, as the repeated wetting and drying this causes can lead to chapping. Proper hydration is crucial, and physicians recommend the use of home humidifiers and the intake of adequate amounts of fluid.

Topical Treatments

The Mayo Clinic advises protecting your lips with an oil-based lubricating cream or lip balm that contains petrolatum or beeswax. Cream or balm containing sunscreen should be applied before exposure to cold, dry weather, and the lips should be covered with protective clothing. Treatment should be reapplied frequently while outside. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends using lip balms that contain sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher.

Natural Remedies

For those seeking chemical-free options for treating chapped lips, HomeRemediesWeb.com lists honey (in conjunction with Vaseline), coconut oil, cucumber and aloe vera as effective treatments. They also stress the importance of proper hydration for preventing chapping.

When to Seek Medical Attention

Although most cases of chapped lips can be effectively self-treated, resistant or severe cases may require the attention of a physician. For chapped lips that are resistant to over-the-counter or home treatments, DERMAdoctor.com advises that prescription low-potency steroid ointment may be effective. Some severe forms of chapped lips, such as angular cheilitis, may be caused by bacterial or fungal infections, and these conditions usually require pharmaceutical treatment.
