What Are the Side Effects of Taking Sleeping Aids Nightly?

Many people rely on prescription sleep aids to get a better nights sleep. Commonly prescribed sleep aids include Ambien, Lunesta and Rozerem. These medications should be used only under the supervision of your physician. Most of these medication are not for long-term use, and some may cause dependence. It is important to discuss these side effects with your physician.

Drowsiness

Next-day drowsiness is a common side effect when using sleep aids. It is important to make sure that you set aside at least seven to eight hours of sleep prior to taking your medication. If your drowsiness is severe, and you are unable to complete your daily activities, consult your physician.

Dizziness

Many people who use sleep aids may notice that they experience dizziness the next day. Be careful driving or operating machinery until you understand how this medication may effect you. Some people also experience headaches with or without dizziness.

Drug-Induced Amnesia

Some people on sleep aids wake in the middle of the night and do things that they do not remember the next day, such as talking on the phone, driving, eating or having sex. This side effect may be greater in those who use alcohol or take other medications that make them feel sleepy or drowsy.

Dependance and Tolerance

After using sleep aids for a period of time, you may develop a tolerance for the medication. This means that the dose you are taking is no longer effective to help you sleep because your body has gotten used to it. You may require higher dosages to be able to fall asleep. Some individuals become dependent on sleeping medications and are no longer able to sleep without medication.
