Skin cells take a lot of damage from environmental exposure and the natural processes of aging. Wrinkles, fine lines and discoloration are just a few of the effects people see in their skin as the years go by. Other skin problems, such as acne scarring, stretch marks and freckles can cause people to become self-conscious about their skin and ready to try something new to help smooth out the complexion. In the search for treatments to reduce or remove surface imperfections from the skin, microdermabrasion is an increasingly popular option.

Description

Microdermabrasion uses an abrasive material to remove the thin outer layer of skin and promote the underlying layers to grow and heal the area, leaving skin smooth and refreshed looking. Part of microdermabrasion's beneficial effects come from the fact that the treatment stimulates the production of collagen, a protein that provides structure and fullness to the skin surface.

Uses

People use microdermabrasion to remove signs of aging, including fine lines, age spots and wrinkles. It is also used to lessen stretch marks caused by pregnancy or rapid weight gain. Acne scars and other scarring of the skin also respond well to microdermabrasion treatments. Other uses include reducing freckles and general smoothing of the skin.

Benefits

Microdermabrasion treatment has no downtime, so you can return to your normal activities immediately after the procedure. It is also painless, quick and effective at removing signs of aging. There are no side effects associated with microdermabrasion, although there may be some redness of the skin for a short time afterward.

Costs and Time

A typical professional microdermabrasion treatment takes 30 to -60 minutes and is performed in a doctor's office, spa or salon. Most people need five to 12 treatments to see results. These treatments usually require a visit to the doctor's office or salon every week or two. The total cost for 12 treatments is around $1,200, according to The Ultimate Microdermabrasion Guide. Home kits are less expensive way to experience microdermabrasion, usually in the $30 to $40 range, but they are often less effective than professional microdermabrasion treatments. Some examples of home microdermabrasion kits include Susan Lucci's Youthful Essence and Neutrogena Healthy Skin Rejuvenator.

Warnings

People who get microdermabrasion treatments should make sure that the equipment used has been properly sterilized. Poorly cleaned and sterilized equipment could lead to infections. There are some medical conditions that make using microdermabrasion dangerous. Individuals with rosacea or lupus, for example, should not use microdermabrasion. Children under age 14 should also not have microdermabrasion treatments.
