Acne is an inflammatory skin dysfunction caused by bacteria that becomes trapped inside the pores of the skin. While there are many skin care products on the market that claim to clear the skin, some are more effective than others. Identifying the most effective acne care products will enable you to clear your acne quicker.
Retinoids
Retinoids are derived from vitamin A, and can help slough off dead skin cells more quickly, while encouraging the skin to develop new skin cells. This can prevent the pores from becoming clogged with dead skin cells, reducing the frequency of acne breakouts. Retinoid creams and gels are available only by prescription. There are many different strengths of retinoid products. The one you should use depends on your skin type and severity of your acne. Check with your dermatologist or doctor to find out which retinoid is right for you.
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil is an antibacterial and antimicrobial oil that is extracted from the Australian tea tree plant. According to the Department of Dermatology at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, tea tree oil is just as effective as benzoyl peroxide cream at drying up and eliminating acne, but without causing side effects such as redness, peeling or burning. Tea tree oil is available at any health food store or natural foods market, or it can be purchased online. Tea tree oil should be diluted before using it on your skin. Dip a cotton ball into water and then drop two drops of tea tree oil onto it. Diluted tea tree oil can be used to treat acne three times a day.
Benzoyl Peroxide
According to the United Health Services, benzoyl peroxide is one of the most widely used and effective over the counter acne treatments available. Benzoyl peroxide is formulated into both cream and gel form, and is available in many different strengths, most commonly in 2.5 percent, 5 percent and 10 percent concentrations. Benzoyl peroxide can sometimes cause side effects such as redness, itching or peeling on the skin. Using the lowest strength benzoyl peroxide cream or gel will minimize the risk of irritation. A pea-sized amount of benzoyl peroxide can be used on the skin twice a day. If severe irritation occurs, discontinue using the benzoyl peroxide cream or gel and consult your doctor or dermatologist.
