Emphysema is one of many conditions under the general term of COPD, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. These types of conditions affect your ability to breathe normally. Emphysema occurs when there is damage to the air sacs in your lungs. The main cause of emphysema is smoking; however, it can also be the result of exposure to pollution or certain chemicals. It is important to talk to your doctor as soon as you notice symptoms. The right treatment plan can help slow the progression of this disease.
Common Symptoms
The Mayo Foundation states that the initial symptoms of emphysema may be mild. However as the disease progresses, your symptoms will slowly get worse. These initial symptoms include shortness of breath, chronic cough, fatigue, wheezing sounds when you breathe and chest discomfort or tightness.
Additional Symptoms
According to Ceders Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, additional signs include being unable to catch your breath with even minimal exertion or when lying down, a worsening of your breathing whenever you have a cold, a cough that produces a yellow or green mucus and unexplained weight loss. You may have difficulty eating due to being unable to catch your breath.
Severe Symptoms
If your body does not get the oxygen it needs you may eventually notice that your lips or fingernails turn a blue or grayish color. If you have other medical conditions such as heart disease or diabetes, emphysema can make then worse.
