Symptoms That a Woman Is Pregnant

From the moment of conception, your body begins to go through rapid changes. This is an exciting time for new parents-to-be. Usually, pregnancy is detected by about the time you have missed a period. Many women begin to experience symptoms right before or around that time. Symptoms may not be the same for all women, and women may also have different symptoms with each of their pregnancies.

Breast Tenderness

Breast tenderness is usually experienced in the beginning stages of pregnancy. It feels similar to or worse than the breast tenderness you may get around the time of your menstrual period. You may also notice changes to your breasts. The areola may appear to darken and become larger. Some women may also notice the appearance of blue veins in the breast tissue. These changes are your body's way of getting ready for breastfeeding. Warm showers or baths may help minimize discomfort. You should also wear a supportive, well-fitting bra during this time.

Nausea

Nausea, with or without vomiting, is a common symptom during pregnancy. For most women, it usually begins around the seventh week of pregnancy and usually subsides by the second trimester, at week 13. Some women may feel nausea as soon as they miss their period. Food aversions and cravings are also common at this time. If your nausea is accompanied by vomiting, you may be at risk for dehydration. Make sure you have an adequate fluid intake and eat a diet of bland foods. Because nausea is usually worse on an empty stomach, eating smaller meals more frequently may be helpful. If you are vomiting several times per day, consult your obstetrician.

Fatigue and Lightheadedness

Many women experience fatigue and light-headedness in the first trimester. This may be because of a decrease in blood sugar or the rapid rise in hormones. Your body is expending energy to the growing fetus, and therefore you may be feeling more tired than usual. Getting a good nights sleep is essential during this time. Taking an afternoon nap is also helpful to combat fatigue.

Mild Cramping and Implantation Bleeding

Some women experience mild cramping in the beginning of their pregnancies. This is probably because of the implantation of the fetus and the uterus stretching to accommodate the embryo. You may also experience mild spotting around the time that your period may be due. This is from the embryo implanting into the wall of your uterus. Spotting is usually pink or brown in color and is very mild. If cramping becomes severe and is accompanied by heavy, bright-red bleeding, contact your practitioner.
