Most people associate the word "aerobic" with exercise, which is correct. Aerobics activity is an exercise routine that involves large muscle groups, is maintained for a prolonged period and is usually rhythmic in nature.
What is Aerobic Fitness?
Aerobics comes from Latin meaning "air" and "life." The term "aerobics" was coined by Dr. Kenneth Cooper in 1968, as an activity that relies on oxygen to sustain a physical activity. Fitness is an overall feeling of well-being and a sense of self-awareness. Tanja Baumann, a fitness consultant, says fitness incorporates endurance, flexibility, strength and coordination. Aerobic fitness is physical activity that increases oxygen to the body to enhance the physical, mental and emotional well-being of the person.
Aerobic Fitness for Adults
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says adults should engage in moderate-intense (intensity) physical activities for at least 30 minutes (duration) on five or more days of the week (frequency). To be effective, aerobic activity considers frequency, intensity and duration. Frequency is how many times a week the activity is performed. Duration is how long the activity is performed, and intensity is determined by the difficulty of the activity.
Examples of Aerobic Fitness
Any activity that's physical and increases the heart rate is considered aerobic. Activities such as biking, swimming, running, jumping rope, playing basketball or walking briskly are considered aerobic. However, indoor stationary machines, either used at home or in health clubs, can be used as well. These types of machines may include cycles, stair-steppers or treadmills.
Benefits of Aerobic Fitness
Aerobic activity is the same as cardiovascular activity; both are physical activities that increase oxygen to the lungs, heart and blood vessels. Aerobic exercises that reach higher levels of intensity have greater value to strengthen the cardiovascular system and increase lung volume, according to Baumann. In addition, with moderate-intensity physical activity, you should expect an increase in breathing and heart rate. With vigorous activities, you can expect a large increase in breathing and heart rate during which conversation is difficult to maintain.
Caution
Exercise can cause injury. Speak with your doctor if you have any concerns about pain or discomfort. If you have a serious health condition, talk with your doctor before making any lifestyle changes. The most common injuries from aerobic workouts include strains and sprains, mostly of the muscles or joints. Serious pain should never be ignored. Balancing your workout to include strength and flexibility training decreases your risk of injury.
