Robitussin-DM is a cough medicine consisting of a combination of dextromethorphan and guaifenesin. Dextromethorphan is an antitussive, which works to prevent cough by decreasing activity in the part of the brain that causes coughing. Guaifenesin is an expectorant that thins mucus in the air passages, making it easier to cough up mucus and clear airways.

Narcotic Effect

Robitussin-DM may have a narcotic side effect, which can cause such symptoms as dizziness, drowsiness or nervous reactions. This can impair thinking and reaction times, making activities such as operating machinery or driving a car potentially dangerous. You should not attempt such activities until you know how you react to the medication.

Stomach Upset

Robitussin-DM may cause nausea, vomiting, constipation or upset stomach. If such a symptom continues over a period of time or becomes worse, you should consult a doctor or pharmacist.

Allergies

Allergic reactions may appear in some patients taking Robitussin-DM, according to Drugs.com. Symptoms of an allergic reaction could include skin rash; itching; swelling of lips, tongue and throat; difficulty breathing; and severe dizziness. If any of these symptoms occur, stop using Robitussin-DM and contact a doctor.
