Symptoms of Earwax Buildup

Earwax is a protective barrier that is produced within the ear canal. Hair follicles and glands line the ear canal and produce this waxy oil, also known as cerumen. Earwax buildup may occur if the glands are producing the wax more often than what can be easily eliminated. Hardening of the wax transpires, leaving a blockage in the ear canal. The Mayo Clinic recommends a doctor evaluation if earwax buildup symptoms are displayed.

Hearing Loss

According to Medline Plus, hearing loss is the most common symptom of earwax buildup. Blockage of the ear canal may inhibit sound from entering the ear, thus creating the difficulty in hearing. This may manifest itself in individuals as requiring sound to be elevated to higher than normal levels and may complicate conversation with the need of repetitive speaking. Hearing is usually restored to normal functioning levels after the wax buildup is removed.

Tinnitus

Tinnitus is described as a ringing, or hearing of atypical noises in the ear. Earwax buildup may be the culprit behind this. Persistent or intermittent sound of either high or low pitch may resonate throughout the affected ear. Even a buzzing sound can be heard. The abnormal sounds can be distracting and disrupt the capacity to hear. Tinnitus is experienced by the individual only and in the affected ear.

Earache

Earaches caused by earwax buildup are, on average, minor. A sensation of fullness in the ear may be felt. Discomfort is sometimes associated with this because excessive wax can apply superfluous pressure inside the ear. Medline Plus discourages inserting cleaning devices into the ear canal. Using a soft cloth wrapped around a finger and cleaning the outer canal is preferred. Other symptoms, such as drainage from the ear, fever, and insistent or severe pain may be present in association with earwax buildup. This can indicate a more serious problem and a medical professional should be involved.
