Going to daycare for the first time can be very upsetting for your child. This may be the first time she is away from you, and the new environment can seem overwhelming. Prior to sending your child to daycare, make sure you stay positive about the experience. She is likely to pick up on your cues and feel less anxious about it. Avoid springing daycare on her without warning. Don't leave without a goodbye, as this can cause a feeling of mistrust.
Step 1
Visit the daycare with your child before his first day. Let him get used to the surroundings while you are still present. Allow him to play with the toys and meet the other children and the teacher.
Step 2
Set up a playdate with one of the other children in the daycare. Arranging a playdate with one or more of the children can make your child feel as if she has a friend when she goes to the daycare.
Step 3
Talk in a positive manner about daycare. Let him know about the fun he will have and the friends he will meet. Read him stories about daycare to engage his interest. Describe what a typical day will be like at the center.
Step 4
Stay for a while the first few times you drop her off. Never sneak out of the room without a goodbye and a hug. Let her know that you will be back soon to pick her up. She may cry when you leave, but it should subside within a few minutes. If you are nervous about her being upset, you can call the center to check on her later in the day.
Tips and Warnings
- Find out the daycare's policy on toys from home. If allowed, you can have her bring a comforting blanket or stuffed animal from your house.
