Whether you have just moved to a new city, been in a long-term relationship that caused you to let your other relationships wither away or have grown apart from your current friends, you might have the desire to make new friends. Meeting new friends can sometimes feel daunting, especially if you are a naturally shy person. Fortunately, there are many options for meeting new people who can eventually become your friends. It is important to stay open and be proactive during the process.
Step 1
Have a positive attitude towards the process of meeting new friends. Understand that if you do not like yourself or have a negative attitude, no one else will choose to be around you either.
Step 2
Meet people through your friends and other people whom you already know. You could organize an event or throw a party with the invitation that these people bring others they know to meet new people.
Step 3
Meet people through your workplace. If this is not possible, consider changing jobs or perhaps getting another side job. You can become a bartender, DJ or bouncer for a nightclub or a barista in a coffee shop, as these jobs all allow you to interact with different customers, especially during quieter moments.
Step 4
Volunteer for an organization or cause that you feel connected to, as this experience will likely put you into contact with others who share your passions.
Step 5
Join a sports team or league so that you can see a group of people for at least a series of a few weeks. Go out for a meal or drinks after one of your games.
Step 6
Sign up for a course that interests you. You can break the ice with someone by asking to exchange contact information in case you miss a class session.
Step 7
Join a fitness center. You can get into shape while meeting other healthy, active people.
Tips and Warnings
- Some ideas for organizations you can volunteer for include a local soup kitchen, church, Habitat for Humanity, Boys and Girls Club of America or the American Cancer Society. By volunteering, you can perform good deeds while connecting with other people who are doing the same. Many cities have recreational softball or basketball teams you can join, as well as church sports leagues.
