Difficulties of Motherhood

While pregnant, expectant mothers often imagine a peaceful motherhood. Scenes of peacefully rocking a baby to sleep while sitting in a recliner and having them breastfeed effortlessly might come to mind. Pregnant women might imagine all the endeavors she can accomplish while the baby sleeps. Women experience several challenges when becoming mothers.

Fussy Babies

Having a fussy baby who is constantly in need can erode a mother's confidence and create a source of major stress. When a baby cries for hours and hours, it can easily put a strain on her relationship with her partner and harm her emotional well-being.

Mood Swings

It is common for new mothers to experience mood shifts because of sleep deprivation, the stress that accompanies this tremendous life change, lack of adequate support, the physical demands of taking care of children and hormonal changes.

Relationship Problems

Sometimes new mothers become resentful of their husbands. While a mother's life changes dramatically after a new baby is born, a father's life does not change as much, which can create some jealousy on the part of mothers. It is also common for mothers to disagree with their husbands about the best way to raise children.

Bonding Issues

When mothers read about how bonding is such an essential aspect of a baby's development, they can feel worried or stressed if they do not feel an instant connection with their newborns. Some mothers have an instant feeling of deep love for their babies the moment the baby enters their arms. For others, that feeling develops after some time.

Breastfeeding Challenges

For some mothers, breast-feeding is a wonderful experience that comes naturally. For others, it can be painful and increase a woman's risk of developing postpartum depression.

Discipline

Another challenge of motherhood is the difficulty of effectively disciplining a child while still expressing deep love for him. It can be difficult for some mothers to be an authority figure rather than a friend to their children.

College

Having children grow up and move away to college is another difficulty of motherhood. After all the time, energy and resources spent in raising a child, it can be hard to watch an offspring grow independent of you.
