Creating a potty training wall chart can be just the motivation your toddler needs to finish potty training. Creating a potty chart is easy and should be tailored to your child. Using your child's favorite cartoon characters is one of the quickest ways to interest your child in being rewarded for going potty. Remember that staying consistent with potty chart rewards will help motivate your child and create less confusion.
Step 1
Cut a piece of white poster board so that it is at least 11 inches by 14 inches. If you have space for a larger wall chart you can make the poster board larger.
Step 2
Arrange cutouts of your child's favorite cartoon character around the outside edge of the poster board. Your child may enjoy helping arrange the cutouts.
Step 3
Draw seven squares that measure 1 inch by 1 inch. Arrange them in a straight line like you would see on a calendar. Write your child's name on the chart with a marker in a coordinating color to the cartoon cutouts.
Step 4
Take your poster to a local print shop or office supply store to have the poster laminated. Laminating the poster will protect it from little fingers, humidity from the bathroom and make it reusable for as long as it takes to potty train your child.
Step 5
Attach the chart to the wall with push pins. Make sure the chart is at a level where you can help mark off each successful potty attempt during the day but is also at a level where your child can watch his progress.
Step 6
Tie a 12-inch piece of yarn around a dry erase marker and also around a push pin. You will use this marker to place a tally mark on the chart in that day's box.
Tips and Warnings
- Reusable stickers can be used in place of a tally mark for children who enjoy stickers.
- Do not forget to mark the chart with each successful potty attempt or the chart will no longer be a motivator for your child.
